The Most Bittersweet Milestone Yet

I have always loved having Monty sleeping next to me, and I had planned to keep him In the next2me for as long as he would fit! It was always such a lovely feeling hearing him through the night or seeing him peeking at me through the netted siding. If he woke up at night, I would pop my hand in, and he would hold it to resettle.

When we first brought him home, we would swap sides of the bed each night depending on who was on night feed duty. For the last three to four months, when he’s been sleeping through the night, he has always been beside me. Then his sleep went downhill — it’s just too tight in there, and he keeps waking himself up trying to get comfy.

We decided to try him in his cot overnight and it's been quite an easy transition. It feels very bittersweet because it really feels like he’s growing up now. I weirdly feel like I’m missing out on seven hours with him - which is ridiculous because we’re asleep haha! I find myself watching him on the monitor non-stop. It’s really true that it all goes by so fast.

I wanted to share a couple of tips that we’ve found helpful during this transition. First, try starting day naps in the cot early on — it helps them get used to the room and feel more comfortable in it. I think we started Monty in his cot around 3 months. One thing we’ve used that’s made a big difference is our sticky blackout blinds from Amazon. They’ve really helped him sleep a bit longer and not wake up too early with the sunlight!

One essential part of our routine has been dream feeds. We tried dropping them, but Monty would wake up at 2 a.m. screaming — so we’ve gone back to them and are taking more of an “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” approach. We’ll be sticking with them for the foreseeable future. Since bringing them back, he’s been sleeping from 7:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.!

We also noticed he wasn’t settling as easily at his usual 6:00 p.m. bedtime, so now we wait until 7:00 p.m. That extra hour means he’s tired enough to go down without much fuss, which has made bedtime easier for both of us. Even though it's felt a bit sad — kind of bittersweet — getting more uninterrupted sleep has been amazing for me. I feel sooo much more energized in the mornings, so it definitely feels worth it!
