Navigating Friendships as a Mum

Friendships in Motherhood šŸ¤

I used to think there was something wrong with me for not having a big group of friends.

Everyone else seemed to have these huge circles, constant plans, group chats always going off… and I’ve just never really been that girl.

I’ve always had a smaller circle, a few people I’m really close to, but for a long time it made me feel like I was missing out on something.

Now though? I finally get it. And I actually love it.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become so much more comfortable with the kind of friendships that feel right for me - slower, deeper, more intentional. Less noise, more meaning.

Since having Monty, that’s shifted again in the nicest way. I’ve met other mums and naturally built a bit more of a community around me, and there’s something so reassuring about being around people who just get it. The chats about sleep schedules, feeding, tantrums - all the things that would probably bore anyone else senseless šŸ˜‚

And it’s funny, because it’s actually so much easier to make friends when you have kids. You skip the small talk a bit - you already have this huge thing in common. These days, instead of long lunches, it’s soft play dates… which I never thought I’d say, but I genuinely love. The babies are entertained (and exhausted by the end), and you still get a proper catch-up. Win-win.

At the same time, I value my non-mum friendships more than ever. There’s something really grounding about stepping out of ā€œmum modeā€ and just feeling like myself again. It’s harder to see them as much — life just feels full in a different way now — but that almost makes the time we do have together feel more special. Although realistically, we’re all booking things months in advance these days just to make it work.

The bit I’ve struggled with most recently is distance. A lot of my closest friends live in different countries or a few hours away, and especially at this stage with a toddler, you really feel that. On those overwhelming days, I do wish I could just pop round to a friend’s for a coffee and a bit of company.

If you’ve been feeling that too, you’re definitely not alone šŸ¤
